UPDATE: We were able to get in touch with a spokesperson for Porsche regarding how they acquired the one million fans. We were told that the majority of the fans came organically, though Porsche did run one small ad campaign. The campaign resulted in less than one percent, or about 11,123 of the current 1,112,300 fans. Porsche also made note that 40 percent of its fans are active users and engage on a regular basis.

We also wanted to note that Porsche is not the first auto manufacturer to hite the one million Facebook fan mark. It is simply the only auto manufacture to do so on the corporate fan page. Ford's Scott Monty let us know that they have 2.25 million fans on Facebook when counting all their fan pages together, with the Mustang fan page accounting for over one million on its own.

Interesting tidbit, Ford has 2.25 times more fans than Porsche, yet sells far more than 2.25 times more cars.

Not Audi, not General Motors, not even Ford has reached one million fans on Facebook. But the quiet sports car maker Porsche has accomplished that feat.

To date, Porsche hasn't really been talked about within the automotive social media universe. In fact, most people probably do not give them a second thought. Usually the talk is around Ford and General Motors both in the news and at industry conferences. But while the competition wasn't paying attention, Porsche was acquiring fans on Facebook at a rapid rate.

If you think about it, most people will say they like the Porsche brand, they just can't afford one of its cars. So clicking the like button on its Facebook fan page may be as close as some fans ever get.

To celebrate the milestone, Porsche is offering a special thank you to its fans. Each fan is being offered the chance to have their name inscribed on a special Porsche. The special Porsche will be showcased at a celebration in February 2011 at the Porsche Museum in Stuggart, Germany. You have until December 31, 2010 to click the "Put my name on that Porsche!" button. The button is located on a custom landing tab titled 1,000,000 on Porsche's Facebook fan page. More details will be released in January about the celebration.

Congratulations to Porsche on being the first carmaker to one million fans on Facebook.

  1. It's great to see Porsche joining the fray here. I wonder what their process was for getting 1 million fans? All organic or a healthy dose of Facebook ads?
    As far as Ford goes Joel, we hit the 1 million mark some time ago. Mustang alone as over 1 million fans. It's just that the corporate page doesn't have a million fans because we spread our fans out over a number of pages, unlike Porsche. Cumulatively, Ford has about 2.25 million fans.
