Oprah's New Beetle giveaway

"THE BEETLES ARE COMINNNNNNGGGGGG!"

Paul? Ringo?

No, but you're forgiven if you thought that was the introduction to last week's Apple iTunes event. Play the video below, and you'll see everyone's favorite transformista, Oprah Winfrey, giving away a bunch of 2012 Volkswagen New Beetles earlier today as she tapes the final episodes of her long-running gabfest.

According to the New York Post, medics were held on standby, in case audience members got the vapors.

The Oprah giveaway pays homage to her extravagant gifting of a fleet of Pontiac G6 sedans a few years back. This time, Oprah's "Ultimate Favorite Things" show chose the New Beetle, driven in with Santa Claus.

Along with the Beetles, Oprah also handed out jewelry, Apple iPads, 3D televisions, cruises and other fab accessories.

Look carefully in the screen cap above, and you'll see that it's not the upcoming New Beetle that Oprah's minions parked on stage, though. The 2012 model won't be shown publicly until next year--sometime in May, we're told, after the 2011 New York Auto Show. Kudos for the product placement, but we can't help but wonder: will folks be happy to win a car they've never seen?

Probably. As one Twitterhead said, "Omg @oprah just gave away the 2012 VW beetle that nobody gets to see until may!"

OMG, indeed, Oprah. OMG.

  6. The winners are going to be surprised when they finally see and take delivery of it. The shape has changed in somewhat dramatic fashion. If you google VW 1930s you'll see the car has a much more elongated back end to it. More headroom and more backseat space and headroom. If they'd only use the suicide doors of the original. :)

  7. Would be nice if she had picked an American car again. Why not the new Ford Focus that will also come out during the first quarter of next year?
Would have been a nice reward for an American company that has done a lot right during these hard times.

  8. I agree with AP! Oprah is a great lady, no doubt. However, I think that sometimes her generosity is not completely thought thru. Kudos AP
