Continuing our week-long series on the best family luxury coupes, today’s segment is on the 2011 Infiniti G37 Coupe.

Infiniti G37 Coupe

Many consider the 2011 Infiniti G37 as one of the most well-rounded entry-level luxury cars on the market. Available in sedan, coupe and convertible, the Infiniti G has plenty to offer its various consumer constituents. As the subject of this series is best family luxury coupes, we’ll look at the characteristics of the 2011 Infiniti G37 Coupe that qualify it for inclusion in this select group.

The 2011 Infiniti G Coupe is a high-performance luxury sport coupe available in G37 Coupe and G37 Coupe Journey, G37x Coupe AWD (all-wheel drive), and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT. Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) begin at $36,200, $37,650, $39,300, and $42,400, respectively. These reflect an increase of $150 over 2010 model year prices.

Note that the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) makes its debut in December of this year, starting with the G37 coupe-based IPL G Coupe and IPL G Coupe 6MT. The new IPL G Coupe is not part of this review and will be considered separately following introduction.

On sale as of November 10th, the 2011 Infiniti G37 Coupe models follow up on last year’s interior refresh with a new front fascia, sport package now available on the AWD model, and navigation package now with premium package as standard on the Sport 6MT model. Other changes for 2011 include new 18- and 19-inch wheel designs.

The sport package (now available on G37 Coupe Journey and G37x Coupe AWD) and G37 Coupe Sport 6MT add special sport-styled seats with thigh extensions and power adjustable torso and thigh bolsters for the driver, unique steering wheel stitching and high-grip aluminum pedals.

While The Car Connection editors have not yet completed a review of the 2011 Infiniti G37 Coupe, they have given it an overall rating of 8.3 (out of 10).

Performance and Fuel Economy

Performance for the 2011 Infiniti G Coupe stems from the 3.7-liter V-6 engine with variable valve event and lift (VVEL) technology rated at 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The VVEL system helps improve performance and response by combining hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway (G37 and G37 Journey), 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway (Sport 6MT), and 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway (G37x AWD).

The engine is backed by a choice of a lightweight six-speed manual transmission or electronically controlled seven-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, downshift rev matching, drive sport mode and adaptive shift control, and available solid magnesium paddle shifters. Speed-sensitive steering and vehicle dynamic control are standard on all 2011 Infiniti G37 Coupes.

Standard four-wheel vented discs with four-channel, four-sensor anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist provide braking performance.

The sport package (available on G37 Coupe Journey and G37x Coupe AWD models and standard on G37 Coupe Sport 6MT) includes 19-inch wheels and high-performance tires, viscous limited-slip differential, sport-tuned suspension, sport brakes, unique front fascia, sport-styled seats and steering wheel stitching, aluminum pedals and paddle shifters (automatic transmission models only).

Technology

Technology and convenience features in the 2011 G Coupe and include such items as standard Infiniti intelligent key with push button ignition, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering column with increased travel, illuminated glove compartment and automatic temperature control.
