Selling Your Car Online: Free Websites Or Premium?

More Americans than ever are having to sell their vehicles privately rather than trade them in with a car dealer. It’s well known that you can put more money in your pocket by selling privately compared to trading in. In fact, you can often not just make more money on the trade, but you may be able to get a better buy on the new or pre-owned car you want to buy if you make a no-trade deal.

But the economic downturn has also forced more car owners to turn that second or third vehicle taking up space on the driveway into much-needed cash. When that happens, you have no choice but to put the car, truck, or SUV up for sale yourself.

A new world for private sellers

It used to be that private sellers only had to insert a five-line ad into their local paper or shopper to sell their car. After that, it was a matter of sitting back and waiting for the phone to ring. All that has changed now that the Internet has become the primary medium for selling your car. But where do you begin? There are so many choices for posting your vehicle online.

In my new book, HELP! I Gotta Sell My Car NOW! I advise private sellers to begin on free websites, as long as they aren’t desperate to sell their vehicle immediately. This allows you to see if it will sell without forking over hard-earned cash to simply place your ad on a premium website. And there are tons of free sites to use, from Craigslist.org and Backpage.com to Kijiji.com and Oodle.com.

If your vehicle doesn’t sell within a reasonable amount of time and you want to try your hand at premium sites, keep the listings on the free sites while you expand horizons into paid ones. The more mud you throw up, the better the chance of something sticking. In this case, the more ads you have online, the better the chance of finding a credible buyer.

Premium sites

Some of the more effective premium sites for selling vehicles are AutoTrader.com and Cars.com. They each offer different packages, and AutoTrader even offers a free listing. However, if you are planning on using a premium website, buy the most expensive package that is appropriate for your car and your budget. There are added benefits that can help sell your car with each higher priced package.
