I met some super cool people during the Fireball Run. This is the short story on one of them.
Quite a few teams ran into issues (both mechanical or with Johnny Law) during the rally. Luckily for us we had no such issues. One team was not so lucky, having a rather large mishap before the rally even began.
Darrin Cooper is the owner of Dynamic Auto Restoration. Darrin was planning on running this 1982 Pontiac Trans Am that has been transformed into K.I.T.T. from the show Knight Rider in this year's Fireball Run. The car features a 305 crossfire V-8 hooked to a three speed automatic transmission. The power is sent to the rear wheels (naturally).
Darrin and his rally partner Andy Lee were on the way to the rally when disaster struck. Well, more like a guard rail struck, but it was still a disaster. The front fender and other miscellanious bits were damanged enough that Darin could not drive the car to the rally. Being the happy go lucky chaps that Darrin and Andy are they would not and could not let this ruin their adventure. They rented a 2011 Ford Mustang Convertible V-6 automatic from Hertz and continued their journey to the starting line.
Darin continuously made light of the situation, finding every opportunity to joke about what happened. One night I was outside the hotel and Darrin was tinkering in the car. I asked what he was up to and he jokingly said "Just installing a supercharger..." Another night in a similar situation the answer was NOS (nitrous oxide). As you can tell, Darrin's a funny guy.
Check out the video below for Darin's own comments on the situation.
