Ford Edge

The sticker price on the Edge puts it out of range of this article -- but Ford is knocking $4000 off each one this month, trying to clear out the last of the 2010s as a new 2011 model arrives in dealerships.  The Edge is one of our favorite family SUVs.  On a dry road, it offers responsive handling.  On a wet or frozen road, its available AWD outgrips what many rivals have to offer.  And on any road, it looks sharp.  There's no third-row seat option, but otherwise, we find few flaws with the Edge.

Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback actually outperforms every other vehicle on this list on a snowy road.  Subaru's symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system is that good.  Wagon styling also gives it a lower center-of-gravity than most -- adding to its grip advantage.  Its low-mounted boxer engine gives it nice balance, and its interior is more stylish than what you've grown to expect from Subaru.  Under $25k it's a bit slim on features, but it's worth a look, anyway.
