Six Family Cars You Can Still Get with a Stick Page 3

If you need SUV space to go with your AWD, Subaru's still got your back.  The Outback, built on the Legacy's excellent bones, is available with the same six-speed number, plus added ground clearance and storage space.  What, you think it's more of a wagon than an SUV?  The automotive press disagrees -- this was Motor Trend's 2010 SUV of the Year -- and in an age of crossovers, even SUVs that look boxy and truck-like usually have the same architecture as the Outback hidden underneath their faux-tough bodies.

Many in the automotive press consider the 6 the sportiest of the midsize family cars.  Mazda knows this, and is careful to offer its sex family hauler with a six-speed stick, in both budget models and near-luxury editions.  It's a nice, sporty stick (these are the same people who brought us the RX-8 and the Miata, after all).  You still can't get it with a V6, but you don't want a family sedan with a V6, anyway.  Take the savings of the four-cylinder edition, and enjoy driving it with both hands.

  1. "Chevy and Ford have dropped the manual completely from the midsize family car class" The 2011 Ford Fusion S or SE with the 2.5L I4 and 6 speed manual, Ford is not out of the midsize manual transmission game.

  2. Maybe in Montana or North Dakota but 94% of us have to deal with traffic, screaming kids, and cups full of coffee :-)

  3. Oh, and if you want to save money on gas in the long run then get auto with your Outback (22/29) as opposed to manual (19/27)
Not sure why but it's been this way for years now even when they had the the 4-speed sitting in there...

  4. I'm not sure how you are defining family cars; but there are new 2010 Saab 9-3s out there with manuals, and a ton of standard features, for around $20k.

  5. Yeah...thank god Ford has not completely eliminated the option on it's best selling sedan, the Ford Fusion. I hate to say that it is a better looking set a wheels next to the Sonata but that falls within the eyes of the beholder.
