Attractive styling, spacious interior, long standard feature list, generous warranty, and low base pricing (MSRPs from $19,1965-$25,295) aren’t the only draws for the completely redesigned 2011 Hyundai Sonata: it also earns Top Safety Pick distinction. Offered with only a four-cylinder engine (most competitors offer an optional V-6), the Sonata achieves an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway – making it the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car in its class.
All-new for 2010, the Subaru Legacy is mostly unchanged for 2011 – and both model years earn the Legacy Top Safety Pick status. As with most competitors, the Legacy offers a full suite of safety features, including available symmetrical all-wheel drive (which some consider a safety feature). Unlike others, however, the 2010 Legacy was rated tops in safety by not only the IIHS but also the federal government. Starting MSRPs range from $19,995-$31,355 for 2011 models.
Subaru’s Outback wagon also made the IIHS Top Safety Pick (2010-2011) list. Mostly carryover from 2010, the 2011 Outback offers optional rear vision camera in Premium and Limited models. With its car-like ride and SUV-like utility, the Outback is more like a crossover – and may be perfect for families. Standard all-wheel drive in addition to a plethora of safety features also add to the appeal. MSRPs begin at $23,195.
