Kia is recalling certain Soul and Sorento vehicles from the 2010 and 2011 model years. According to a release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicles have fault in their lighting system that could result in a fire.
The issue centers around wiring harnesses supplied by JCI, which "may have been improperly soldered". In the Soul, the harnesses are found in the front door trim panels, where they are tied to the vehicle's advanced lighting speakers. In the Sorento, they're located in both the front and rear-door trim panels, where they help provide interior accent illumination. When the associated lights in either vehicle are illuminated, "an electrical short may occur that can result in a fire".
The recall affects vehicles manufactured between September 7, 2009 and July 30, 2010. Kia estimates that 35,185 units are involved.
Kia dealers will begin replacing the wiring harnesses this month. If you have questions, you can call your dealer directly, or ring Kia's consumer assistance center at 800-333-4542. Alternately, owners can call the NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and reference recall #SC083.
Also: please note that we made it thorugh that entire article without making one "hot ride" pun. You're welcome.
