Leggings, Hammer pants, vampires: these are tell-tale signs that the 80s revival is in full swing. To market the new Fiesta subcompact to Millennials -- for whom the 80s seem like a kicky time to be alive -- Ford is hoping to capitalize on one of those three trends. Can you guess which? (Hint: it has nothing to do with pant-adjacent clothing.)
Yes, Ford is bringing the Fiesta to The Vampire Diaries, the CW's weekly undead drama. The only problem is, the new season of Vampire Diaries doesn't launch until September 9, and the first Fiesta won't be seen before October, so how can Ford get the youngun's chatting about the Fiesta now? With a social media campaign and contest, of course.
The fun starts with a visit to the CW's Vampire Diaries page. There, you'll see two links -- one to Facebook, one to Twitter -- that allow you to enter the contest and earn a chance to win a 2011 Ford Fiesta.
At first glance, the Twitter campaign seems simplest: just send a tweet to your followers announcing that you've entered the contest, then fill out some basic sweepstakes info. But there's a catch: in addition to the usual contact details, you also need to submit a short (25 - 50) word essay on "WHY you are the biggest fan of The CW Network television series The Vampire Diaries". The Facebook version is nearly identical, but instead of tweeting to your followers, you invite friends to join to contest. Weirdly, this involves entering your friends' email addys instead of inviting them via Facebook, which kind of defeats the point.
The writing requirement may not sound like much of an ordeal, but remember, young people and essays -- even short ones -- are rarely a good mix. What's more, the essay seems to be the primary criteria for winning. We actually like that stipulation, but then, we write a good bit; your reaction may differ. (For those interested, there's a full, eye-crossing rundown of the rules over here.)
You can enter the contest anytime between now and Friday, September 3, at 4:59pm PDT. And if you're not the grand prize winner, you still have a chance to submit questions to the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries, which will be answered through an online video series. That's not as awesome as driving off in a new Ford Fiesta, but you have to admit: it's way, way better than Hammer pants.
