2011 Hyundai Sonata Turbo: 6.5 Seconds To 60 MPH, 34 MPG Highway

2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T

We've known since the 2010 New York Auto Show that the turbocharged 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T would score an estimated 22/34 mpg city/highway from its 274-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. And now we know it'll get to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds.

The information, revealed by Hyundai to Motor Authority in Korea today, puts the Sonata a full second behind the much pricier, 300-horsepower turbocharged inline six-cylinder BMW 335i sedan, but right on par with the manual-transmission BMW 328i sedan and 0.4 seconds ahead of the automatic 328i. Not bad considering the Sonata Turbo is only available with an automatic transmission--and is likely to start at least $5,000 cheaper than the 328i.

While the Hyundai Sonata isn't on par with the BMW's interior refinement, it's not as far off as you'd think if you haven't been in the car, especially when outfitted with the full luxury treatment. For more on the standard Sonata, including our take on its handling and quality, check out our first drive review here.

  1. I would so love to drive one of these, I normally drive trucks, not sedans, but I would willingly drive one of these.

  3. Why compare it to the much smaller 3-series? Compare it to the 5 series and watch the price difference increase.

  5. This thing is smaller in person than it looks. Compares well in size to a 3-Series.
This isn't really shocking anymore - Ford set the bar strong with a 300hp NA RWD V6 and 30+mpg. Pen is in hand, just waiting for the "Starting at under $30K tag line".

  7. Is that 6.5 tested or claimed? If not tested, you could probably an another .5 seconds to the time.

  8. why do people compare this car to BMW 3 series...price wise, that would be apples to oranges, and performance wise it should be to Camry...0-60 in 6.1. I am sure this car can do better than 6.5

  9. I purchased the Sonata Turbo and pretty much love everything about it. The main issue is the gas mileage is HORRIBLE. I am getting 17mpg with 70% city/30% Hwy driving. I was using Costco gas to see if that was the reason and although it went up about 1.5 mpg it still stinks. Just so you know I do drive with a heavy foot, but I am getting the same MPG as I did with my 2000 Lexus RX300. My buddy bought the Turbo and he is avg only 20mpg.
