Report: Jaguar Planning New Entry-Level Model

Jaguar's XF and new 2010 XJ sedans have made waves in the sport-luxury seas, bringing a newer, fresher face to what was once a bit of a stodgy lineup. Now it looks like Jaguar may be planning even more boat-rocking, with an entry-level car on the table.

The reasoning behind the entry-level car is obvious: moving metal. To make money, Jaguar needs a volume car, and that means lowering the bar for entry. While the XF might be argued as Jaguar's current foray into that field, it's nearer a 5-Series/E-Class size than a midsize sedan, and it starts from $52,000 and quickly runs upward of $80,000 for the XFR Supercharged. That leaves a lot of headroom for a sub-XF model.

According to an Autocar interview of Ravi Kant, vice chairman of Jaguar parent company Tata Motors, a new entry-level car "has to happen if you want to keep the brand alive."

So what will an entry-level Jag look like? It won't be the XE sports car coming toward the end of 2012, and it probably won't be coming until after that car makes its debut. It will be a sedan, most likely, and it will be intended to run up against the likes of the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. According to Kant, there's a possibility that Jaguar will collaborate with another carmaker to build the car, since it won't be readily adaptable to any of Jaguar's existing platforms. Aside from that, it's simply too far out to guess as to its design parameters.

For more on the upcoming XE sportscar, however, you can check out our renderings here, and catch the speculative details here.

  1. ...and this is where the wheels come off. This was exactly Fords problem, and they decided the X-type was the solution because it helped them move metal. Do you see Maserati building some mid-market sedan to increase volume? Of course not, Maserati is a premium brand and the Italians understand that. Say it, Mr. Tata...Premium. So the XE, while not as attractive as the F-type, had a chance to build on the XF and XJ. "Collaboration with another carmaker" had also better mean contracting out the assembly to Valmet/Magna or designing jointly with Aston/Maclaren/Bertone/Pininfarina. Any mention of Asian manufacturers will surely sink the ship before they can right it.

    Bad stuff?

  2. Tata should load up a Nano with all the bells and whistles. The Jaquar Nano can be Tata's version of a Lexus.

  3. R2Dad: I have the same fears. Here's hoping they get it right.
Btlh2oguy: hahahahaha. That would be both depressing and awesome.

  7. Btlh2oguy - isn't that called the Aston Martin Cygnet?? I think that they are right to at least look at bringing out a new sedan. The issue with the Ford approach was that it was about taking a cheap platform and draping a Jag design over the top... If they develop a new platform and create something that has a different design and dynamic to the rest of the premium-er range then they could have a winner... And it could be the pathway to a premium hatch and into the micro car market...

  9. And what will be the design? Another Ford Iosis turned into Jag XF, XJ permutation. Most likely something already done, already tried by the Callum staff. Meaning: End of the line for Jaguar, unless there is a complete housecleaning with a new group of designers who know something about classic deigns AKA Pininfarina-Lyons-Porsche. Then let's see what's up. For now, Tata has no clue about turning Jaguar around in the long term.
