Chevrolet unveiled its newest heavy-duty pickup truck today at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD will offer a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission, and Chevy is claiming a towing capacity of 20,000 pounds and a payload of 6,335 pounds.
The Duramax will be B20 biodiesel capable. There will also be a new exhaust-brake system to go along with features such as trailer sway control, an integrated trailer brake control, hill-start assist, automatic grade braking, and intelligent brake assist.
Exterior features will include 20-inch wheels (17- and 18-inch wheels will also be available) and a louvered hood, and extended-cab models will get rear-access doors that can open 170 degrees. On the inside, the truck will offer customers features such as satellite radio, an available mobile wireless Internet system, a wireless cell phone link, OnStar, a navigation system, and USB capability. Also available will be a rearview camera and Chevy's EZ Lift tailgate.
The exhaust brake system may be the most interesting feature here. Chevy claims it, along with the transmission brake, will help reduce brake pad wear and overheating while towing--especially while descending steep grades.
When the truck goes on sale this summer, it will be available in 11 different 2500HD configurations and eight different 3500HD configurations. Dual-wheel 3500HDs will be available, as will a Crew Cab 3500HD with a 6.5-foot bed. Three trim levels will be available: WT, LT, and LTZ.
The 20,000 pound towing capacity is achieved with the fifth-wheel set-up, while conventional towing capacity will be 16,000 pounds. Gross vehicle weight rating will be 13,000 pounds, and all four-wheel drive Silverado HDs will be snow-plow compatible.
Other changes include new frames, a new independent front suspension, and a new asymmetrical rear leaf suspension.
Horsepower and torque haven't yet been confirmed on the Duramax. Also available will be a 6.0-liter gasoline V-8 that pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission. Power numbers are not yet available for that engine, either.
Safety features will include head and side curtain airbags, ABS, and an antiskid system on single-rear wheel models.
