Ken Block's Subaru STI Trax

Ken Block's Subaru STI Trax

We haven't seen this thing (the mutant incarnation of a Subaru and snow mobile) since it made an appearance at a Rally America event last year. Afterwards, DC Shoes released an online film, which featured its co-founder and rally/viral video star Ken Block, showing off the Worlds Fastest Snow Cat.

Subaru brought the unusual, yet staggering snow-hatch to this years SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

The Subaru Trax starts with a rally-spec 2009 WRX STI, complete with the famous DC Shoe livery and lime green accents. Of course, the Trax has been built to Rally America specifications with a stripped-out interior, seam-welded body, full custom roll cage, carbon fiber Recaro racing seats, a full safety harness system and even a fire suppression kit.

Under the hood, this superhero of the snow features a boxer 2.5-liter, which is turbocharged and tweaked to produce an ice-melting 400 horsepower. This should be plenty of power to stay ahead of an approaching snow storm, or scare away those pesky mountain tourists.

Underneath the STIs body is where most of the attention is given. The rally wheels and snow tires have been tossed in favor of a Mattracks 105M1-A1 rubber track system. If you think it looks complicated, it is. However, this tank-like drivetrain and suspension has already proven its worthiness on the slopes at the DC Mountain Labs testing courses.

For the SEMA show, DC and Subaru have added a Yakima snowboard rack to the Traxs roof and fitted it with a matching snow sleigh. With enough room for six, the Trax can double as a winter taxi for you, your friends and a of couple snow bunnies.

We will keep our fingers crossed in hopes that a Trax Package is added to Subarus brochures.
