The Winner: Porsche Boxster / Porsche Cayman

Be shocked. Yes, the Boxster and Cayman are the winners here, but that's strictly in a pre-Great Recession mindset. Price no object usually falls in Porsche's favor, and at $50,000 just for starters, the Boxster and Cayman are easy choices in the sportscar class. Clamp down on costs, like everyone has, and you'll give a strong, hard second look at the 2010 Nissan 370Z. It's nearly the performance equal of the trans-Atlantic team, and its pedigree ripens with every well-executed Z-car that's come since the early 1970s. There's no shame in bargain hunting these days--and clearly, no letdowns when the Z is the performance bargain you choose.

  1. I like this comparison. Agree that Porsche nudging out the Nissan is not a huge surprise. However, it being so close while the prices are 20% to 30% apart is the real story (as you point out). 2 years ago, who cares about that price differential. in today's world, that is a big deal.

  2. I'm not convinced people are really cross-shopping these vehicles. The typical Porsche buyer is buying so much more than just the car - it's about the brand and pedigree too.
Nissan should be very proud of what they've done with the 370Z but to me they are like chalk and cheese.

  3. this comaprison is of a 2010 to a 2006 to 2008 987 chassis. Not even a 2009, which has the 7 speed dual clutch transmission and new entertainment electronics. But the picture of the red Boxster is an 09, or the second generation of the 987 chassis. The stats on the Boxster / Cayman are wrong also. I do not think the writer ever drove the Porsche. Amazing.
