TomTom has finally taken the wraps off its long-awaited iPhone GPS navigation app, and it's priced to start at $99. That's almost as much as a standalone GPS unit.
The iPhone app pricing also doesn't include the optional car kit that holds the phone, charges it, provides hands-free calling and improves GPS reception. Full package pricing for the U.S. hasn't been revealed, but Europeans are paying about $195.
Even with the typically lower prices of the U.S., that's well into dedicated GPS unit pricing, raising questions as to the value of the new app. On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for getting one more device out of the car.
The well-known standalone GPS manufacturer was expected to be first to market with an iPhone GPS app, but delays in development led to the TomTom navigation offering being released after AT&T's branded TeleNav app and Navigon's Mobile app.
