That new small Lexus hatchback that's been rumored for months has now been confirmed by Toyota itself, with the release of this sketch.
Toyota plans to show the new compact luxury car at next month's 2009 Frankfurt auto show.
The latest round of speculation may throw cold water on Lexus fans in the U.S., though. While the new vehicle is being cast as a competitor for the BMW 1-Series, latest reports suggest it won't be sold in the U.S. at all. Other reports indicate the new car will be a European version of the 2010 Lexus HS 250h.
The only official information is that the concept will demonstrate a mix of technical innovation and ground-breaking design that “promises to raise the bar in the premium compact segment."
If it were to be sold in the U.S., the new compact would have to be priced below the new HS 250h as well as the Lexus IS lineup. That's considered unlikely, given the low-$30,000 pricetag for those models in the 2010 model year.
We'll have more on the new Lexus in the coming weeks, including live coverage from the Frankfurt auto show.
