Cash-For-Clunkers: A List Of Cars That Qualify

Clunkers

Cash-for-clunkers has been a hot topic for months, but the legislation's fate on capitol hill has been so uncertain that we haven't talked much about specifics: that is, how the law would affect you. However, now that Representative Betty Sutton's bill has been approved by the House, the industrious folks at Edmunds have put together a list (in PDF form) of vehicles that would qualify if her proposal were to pass as-is. Which isn't entirely likely, but hey, it's Friday and we're feeling optimistic.

  2. My guess is that to keep the list small and manageable, Edmunds limited the list to cars made since 1990--the assumption being that anything manufactured before 1990 would also qualify. It's certainly not a question of eligibility--if you read the text of the legislation (go to http://thomas.loc.gov and search for H.R.2751), you'll see that older vehicles are definitely included.
    .
Added bonus: there's now a provision for most of the clunker car parts (except the engine block and drive train) to be salvaged and reused, which should please many of the folks opposed to the bill.

  3. The market value of these 'clunkers' just rose to almost $4500. Anyone ready to purchase a new car buys a clunker for his trade-in and gets a $4500 check from us, the taxpayers.

  4. Nope, has to have been registered and insured for the full previous year, can't just buy one.
