The New York Police Department has added 40 new vehicles to its fleet, but these aren't just any ol' squad cars: these are Nissan Altima Hybrids. More importantly, they represent the NYPD's first purchase of hybrid vehicles for its fleet of regular patrol cars.
Skeptics will probably point out that the Altima's $25,391 price tag is about $1,500 higher than the more common Chevy Impala squad cars. And admittedly, compared to the NYPD's nearly 2,400 other vehicles, hybrids won't make up a substantial proportion of the fleet (even when added to the handful of other hybrids employed by the NYPD). However, since they get twice the mileage of regular patrol cars, they do address Mayor Bloomberg's goal of reducing city government's energy consumption by 30% by 2017. The plan is to run the Altimas for a year and see whether buying more makes good sense.
And hey, if things don't work out, there are always other options.
