Driven: 2009 Infiniti G37S. Great Panache With Drivetrain Lash. Page 2

March 15, 2009

The Infiniti's handling is confident and drama-free. The chassis is tight but not punishing, the ride quiet and compliant. It inspires confidence in much the same way the BMW does, being both refined and supple, yet plenty playful when the time arises.

The Infiniti G37S manual, therefore, is a sedan for those who like a little rough and tumble in their sport luxury sedan. But its tendency to make a good driver look like a mediocre one is frustrating to say the least. We look forward to driving one with the new-for-'09 7-speed automatic, as previous experience with the VQ V-6 paired with an automatic transmission proved a far more pleasant experience. Then again, with a 7-speed double clutch gearbox now available on the BMW M3, we imagine that excellent transmission will soon find its way to the 335i and 328i. Unless Nissan/Infiniti have something up their sleeves we're not aware of, it looks like they'll continue to play catchup in terms of drivetrain technology and refinement.
