Calling their suite of fuel-saving technology "a new world of efficiency," Volkswagen today announced a wide range of technologies and engines designed to stretch mpg on many of its vehicles. Initially, these new fuel-saving models are available only in Europe, but pending their sales success we imagine many will eventually make it stateside, especially the technologies fitted to gasoline-powered vehicles.

The systems include a new start-stop system and energy recovery by regenerative braking, electric drives and hybrid systems as well the natural gas-based drive system in the new TSI EcoFuel. By introducing these technologies, VW hopes to bring the cleanest and most fuel efficient cars to the streets.

The Passat BlueMotion uses a common rail TDI (turbo diesel) with 108 hp and stop/start technology to yield 48 mpg and a rather astonishing range of over 870 miles. VW Calls this range "a minor sensation," and notes that a Passat BlueMotion can travel from Berlin almost all the way to Rome on just one tank of fuel.

The Passat BlueTDI features a 140 hp TDI turbodiesel engine (similar to that found in the U.S. in the Jetta TDI) that notably is the first of their TDI engines to comform to Euro-6 standards that will go into effect in 2014. Selective Catalytic Reduction quashes nitrogen oxides (NOX) to ultra low levels, and economy rings in at 45 mpg with the six-speed manual transmission.

The Passat TSI EcoFuel ushers in the natural gas era at VW. They claim to have pushed past the "rather unexciting" performance of natural gas engines with their 148 hp unit that manages a 0-62 mph sprint in 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. They achieve this performance with turbocharging and direct-injection, a world-first for an internal combustion engine powered by natural gas. With the firm's 7-speed DSG gearbox, this vehicle breaks "the magic CO2 limit of 120 g/km in this class." Combined with a gasoline tank, the total range of the vehicle is in excess of 560 miles.

Finally, the Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid boasts capability as the world's first hybrid SUV with a towing capacity of over 7,700 lbs. Combined total power of its gasoline/electric drivetrain is 328 hp and the vehicle manages over 26 mpg. The Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid is capable of electric-only (emissions-free) operation at speeds up to 31 mph. It will enter into production as a 2010 model.

  1. "VW Touareg - SUV lux class"

not in vain Volkswagen has decided to show this green car in the face of VW Touareg. The first generation Touareg in its time was very popular and brought the VW in the business class car industry. The second generation + new technology will give good results.

  2. "Sounds Great"

This Touareg set-up sounds powerful yet fuel efficient. Can't wait to see it on the market. Hopefully a diesel-electric hybrid is not far behind.
