We predicted it a few weeks back--or at least suggested it would be a grand candidate for the scrap heap. Now GM's gone and cancelled the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST, according to our buddy Mike over at PickupTrucks.com.

The latter-day El Camino was to be spun from the Pontiac G8 sedan chassis.  It was due to go on sale later this year, and was named in a Web-based contest that ended up with the unimaginative initials ST.

The dealers who sell Pontiacs were told of the decision this morning. GM has said it's trimming down the Pontiac lineup to no more than three vehicles, and with interesting stuff like the 2009 Solstice, G8 sedan and Fiero--wait, they don't sell a Fiero anymore?--the weird-idea ST will never launch.

  1. "Thank God, but....."

We all know the "business in front, party in the back" crowd will be upset.

  2. "El Camino"

Yeah, would never sell in large numbers but there is no direct competitor for it even though this has been an established niche in the past. How many buyers these days are Aging-Guy-Not-Quite-Ready-To-Be-Old-Guy? Demo: 30-55, suburban, doesn't need truck or 4WD but goes to home depot. I don't know--would have depended on the execution. If it had a low base, was highly customizable (like a mini), and the six got decent mileage, why not?

  3. "Wrong platform"

Had they stretched the HHR and dropped a pickup bed in that rather than start with the G8 GM would have had a viable product in their hands.

Saw one of these the other days, you yanks don't know what you have missed out on. Seriously mean, hot looking ute, better looking than the model they sell here. Was driving my car and saw this weird thing in my rear view, was like wow a G8, Left hand Drive and all, then it turned off and saw it was an ST. Great looking, maybe they will sel body kits here in OZ. You guys really have missed out on something special. HHR? you have to be kidding.

  5. "Lost Opportunity"

What a shame that the people at GM no longer have any balls. The G8 ST is a great image vehicle and would have brought many buyers to the Pontiac brand just like Corvette brings people to the Chevy dealership. It doesn't matter how many of these cars they sell. They create buzz about their respective brands and that sells vehicles.
I know that because GM is taking bailout money they have an obligation to show viability, but eliminating exciting models like the G8 ST is not going to entice anymore buyers into the showroom.
I remember when Pontiac was called the "Excitement Division".
