The Audi Sport motorsports division is taking the stock 420-horsepower R8 and transforming it into a GT3 edition. Starting in the fall of 2009, customers will be able to order a 500-plus horsepower version of the R8 and then spend the rest of their allowance on prepping it for a racing season.
Aside from the additional power, the R8 racing edition will have rear-wheel drive, since four-wheel drive is forbidden in most eligible racing series.A six-speed sequential gearbox will be offered, while the suspension will largely be stock. A new front-end treatment and a big rear wing are meant to improve aerodynamics on the track.
Audi's expanding facilities in Germany and Hungary to make room for the new project. There's no word on pricing just yet.
