2009 Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder

Porsche’s latest special edition is a new Boxster variant that will make its public debut at the New York auto show in April.

The new Boxster RS 60 Spyder, Porsche says, is an homage to the racing Spyders of the early 1960s, winners at Sebring and holders of the nickname “giant killer.” Based on the current-generation Boxster, the new edition gets a substantial cosmetic and hardware upgrade in its transformation.

Out in front, the special edition wears a SportDesign front end to distinguish it from the standard Boxster S. The RS’s 19-inch SportDesign wheels are more prominent in the wheel arches thanks to wheel spacers. Silver metallic paint is twinned with a Carrera Red convertible top; a black top will also be offered.

Underneath the skin, Porsche makes its active suspension standard on the special edition, and eases airflow in the exhaust to bump power up to 303 hp.

Inside, the RS 60 gets stainless-steel door entry guards; a new racing-style gearshift; and revamped textures on the steering wheel, seats and handbrake. The instruments no longer have a hood, and they’re moved slightly farther apart for more racer appeal. Other trim changes include a silver center console, silver rollbars, red taillamp lenses, and a black windshield frame.

Some 1960 copies of the RS 60 will be sold worldwide, with 800 of them destined for North American buyers. Prices will start from $64,900 when the special edition goes on sale in spring of 2008.
