Class-leading cargo space, 12 percent better fuel economy that the old model, and the ability to walk your dog on a rainy day without getting wet – these are the key features of the all-new Mercedes C-Class wagon.
Luggage space varies from 17 to 53 cubic feet depending on now the 60/40 split folding rear seat is positioned. That’s four golf bags or more, according to Mercedes, and more than the outgoing model by up to five cubic feet. An optional self-leveling suspension means the car’s towing potential is also excellent.
A host of other features make the car very practical, including stowage compartments with net covers and a collapsible shopping crate than can be removed and taken inside your home. There also a button that allows electric operation of the tailgate from the driver’s seat, so Fido can walk himself.
Much of the rest of the wagon is based on the sedan, revealed earlier this year. For Europe, it’s available in three trim levels – SE, Elegance, and Sport (in the U.S., merely Luxury and Sport). The latter features a large version of the company’s three-pointed star embedded in the front grille, the first time this has been available on a wagon model. It’s the first in class to offer the option of individually adjustable three-zone climate control.
Mercedes’ anticipatory occupant protection system, Pre-Safe, is also available as an option. It makes use of the time before an imminent accident to prepare the vehicle and its occupants for a collision.
The car makes its public debut at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and goes on sale next summer.
