Audi’s big news for this week’s Shanghai auto show comes in the form of the Cross Coupé quattro, which it dubs a blend of sports car and crossover.

The four-seat concept clearly tells you what it is capable of and whose engineering matches this standard — on all roads, under all conditions,“ Audi says.

The hallmarks of the Cross Coupe include a turbodiesel four under the hood, with 204 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque and a Bluetec badge, signifying it’s a clean diesel that will meet the toughest world emissions standards. Quattro all-wheel drive integrates a Haldex clutch with Audi’s S-tronic gearbox.

The running gear on the Cross Coupe concept — which sounds quite a lot like Audi’s forthcoming Q5 crossover — is suspended by front MacPherson struts and a four-link rear suspension. The concept also sports a fabric roof, ceramic disc brakes, and 20-inch wheels, which would seem to be less likely for production, along with a driver-selectable set of shocks.

Inside, the Cross Coupe features Audi’s MMI control device, which uses a controller, buttons and a screen to control interior functions — including watching TV and listening to audio.
