One thing has dominated Formula One racing more than Michael Schumacher in recent years, and that’s the money from advertising and sponsorship. Companies pay unfeasible large sums of money to have their logos on the cars, but in the new season that’s all changing for one team.
In place of the sponsor’s name, Honda’s cars will simply feature a huge image of the earth. But the new livery is also part of a call to action for everyone to help address global environmental issues. A key part of the campaign is the opportunity for members of the public to have their own names on the car. Via the website www.myearthdream.com, fans can make a pledge to change their lifestyle to improve the environment and donate money to a green charity. In return, their name will form a tiny individual pixel on the F1 car which will help build the image of planet earth and be visible under a microscope.
“We’re not saying F1 is ‘green’,” says John Kingston, Honda environment manager in the UK where the race team is based. “But the fans can really make a difference. If just one percent of the people who watch Formula One were to change one light bulb for an energy-saving one, this would save 38,000 tonnes of CO2. That’s the same amount of carbon emissions produced by the Honda Racing F1 team over three seasons.”
