Even at the European launch of the new Mitsubishi Outlander six weeks ago, people were talking it as a done deal. It was even mentioned in the press pack. But finally the news has been confirmed – the Peugeot 2.2-liter diesel engine will be offered in the Japanese SUV.
A statement released by PSA – parent company of French brands Peugeot and Citroë n – says a collaborative agreement has been signed. Supply of the 154-hp unit, complete with particulate filter, will start sometime in the summer. It’s unclear whether Mitsubishi will continue to offer the 138-hp 2.0-liter powerplant which is the launch diesel model.
The new deal lends some symmetry to the joint venture. Peugeot and Citroë n will sell their own rebadged versions of the Outlander, christened the 4007 and C-Crosser respectively, from later this year. Both cars will also get the 2.2-liter engine.
And perhaps there will be more announcements in the future – the last line of the statement says the pair will pursue their cooperation strategy in ‘win-win’ areas. Mitsubishi is expected to offer a diesel engine in the new U.S. Lancer by 2010, but it is not known if this engine will be the one it referred to at the Detroitauto show.
