L.A. Auto Show Goes Green Page 2

And on Tuesday night, a new partnership was announced between Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen AG. The German automakers intend to share the new Bluetec diesel technology developed by Mercedes and used in the latest version of its E320 sedan. Bluetec is the only technology currently available that can meet the latest – and strictest – diesel emissions standards, Mercedes claims.

Without such technology, manufacturers would not be able to sell diesel-powered vehicles in California and several other states on the U.S. east coast which have copied its stringent diesel emissions standards.

The choice of L.A. to launch all this green technology comes as no surprise to industry analysts. The smoggy city has served as a poster child for emissions control technology, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, has endorsed rules that would effectively mandate sharp increases in fuel economy in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Automakers hope to curry favor in a state where green is becoming the favorite color of its consumers.
