Ford isn’t just the Blue Oval, one of the best-known American car and truck brands; it’s Ford Motor Company, a multi-national company that’s one of the world’s largest automakers. And through production innovations early in the 20th Century, it played an important role in U.S. history.

Some especially noteworthy and market-changing models from the automaker include the Mustang, the Thunderbird, and the F-Series. Other important product milestones for Ford include the introduction (and market success) of the Taurus sedan in the 1980s and the Explorer utility vehicle in the 1990s.

Ford’s F-Series trucks remains a profit center for the company, and it’s now been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for more than 30 years and the best-selling truck model for more than 35 years.

Currently the company sells Ford-badged cars worldwide, while Lincoln-badged luxury models are limited to the U.S. and Canada. Ford has sold cars in the past under the short-lived Edsel and Merkur brands, but also under the longer lasting (but currently dormant) Mercury brand. Over the past couple of decades, Ford has either owned or held controlling interest in Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, and Mazda; but at present, it’s sold (Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo) or given up all but a minority stake (Aston Martin) of all those brands.

Today the great-grandson of Henry Ford, William Clay Ford Jr., is executive chairman of the company while Alan Mulally is president and CEO and Mark Fields is COO.

Henry Ford founded the company in 1903, and with his strong push for vertical integration—at nearly every small step of the business—plus his implementation of the assembly line, company became very successful and profitable. Quite early on, the Model T made affordable transportation within reach of more Americans and led way to the suburbs.

In recent years, the company has seen a resurgence, both in reputation and stock performance, as the company has streamlined its product portfolio and number of brands, and focused (instead of parallel, localized development) on global vehicle platforms that can, with minor modifications, suit each market. It’s also pushed for greater fuel efficiency with downsized, turbocharged EcoBoost engines, as well as with a line of Hybrid and Energi (plug-in-hybrid) products. The automaker remains at the forefront technologically as well, with its MyFord touch infotainment system, a voice and touch-screen based system that now goes into many of its products—for better or worse, depending on expectations.
