The 2008 Volvo XC90 scores well in crash tests and has a raft of standard and optional safety gear.

The XC90 Volvo scores five-star crash ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is a Top Safety Pick, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The NHTSA also awards the XC90 a four-star rating for rollover resistance.

Other Choices:

The 2008 Volvo XC90 has excellent competition in its class. The Acura MDX has Honda's enviably smooth engine and transmission, along with a relatively new shape, while the Volkswagen Touareg has great off-road capability. The VW and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class offer just two rows of seating; the Benz also comes in a high-powered V-8 version. The BMW X5 offers a small third-row seat and excellent dynamics, but a confusing interior.
