The S80 has been completely redesigned for 2007. The new exterior sheetmetal has smoother contours and a revised interior layout is focused around a “slim-line” center console similar in theme to the one that first appeared on the S40. A new 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine is now the S80’s standard powerplant, replacing the previous in-line five. The ’07 S80’s in-line six produces 235 horsepower (an improvement of 27 horsepower over the ’06 model) and is paired with Volvo’s six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The step-up engine is a 311 horsepower 4.4-liter V-8 working through the latest generation of Volvo’s all-wheel-drive system. Adaptive cruise control has been added to the options list for all S80 trim lines. A Blind Spot Information System is another new-for-2007 feature; it uses closed-circuit cameras near the outside mirrors to detect vehicles that might be in the S80’s blind spot in order to warn the driver of a possible obstruction before he makes a lane change. The new S80 also offers a unique safety/personal security feature called the Personal Car Communicator that can determine from a distance whether the car is locked or unlocked — and whether someone is in the vehicle.

Still playing it safe, but with a V-8 and a fresh face.
