Reviews read by TheCarConnection.com award the 2009 Volvo S60 glowing praise for its front seat comfort and support. The Car and Driver reviewer attests the 2009 S60 is “very comfy for long cruises” and “probably my first choice for a road trip.” Edmunds agrees emphatically, stating, “front occupants will bask in the comfort of the Volvo's orthopedically designed seats.” Kelley Blue Book lauds the wide-for-its-class interior, saying this feature “translates into generous shoulder room.”

The backseats of the S60 don't fare quite as well as their front-of-cabin counterparts. Car and Driver says, “Rear-seat passengers also complained about having to crane their necks sideways because the large front headrests blocked their view forward.” Edmunds warns that “rear passengers will likely find the legroom tight,” and ConsumerGuide notes “the nicely shaped bench seat is comfortable for two medium-sized adults, but legroom is very tight if the front seats are set far back.”

Regarding the 2009 S60’s interior, a few editors consider it to be assembled well, though somewhat Spartan in appearance. “The Volvo S60's interior is functional but doesn't feel upscale unless you order the leather upholstery and Dolby Surround Sound options,” comments Edmunds. Cars.com judges the base trim, with its cloth seat, manual driver’s seat, and single CD-player, to be “modest.”

The Auto Channel sums up the S60s ergonomics: “Volvo's iconic climate control switches are the most self-explanatory in the industry.” Kelley Blue Book loves “the placement of the optional navigation screen, which rises up from atop the dash rather than being integrated into the audio head unit.”

Conclusion

Incredibly comfortable front seats make the 2009 Volvo S60’s interior one of the best, even if it’s not fresh.

Other Choices:

The 2009 S60 lands at the entry end of the mid-size sport-sedan spectrum, where a few thousand in sticker price or a slight difference in payments might make the difference. That said, it’s hard to justify the S60’s boost in price for ’09 when it now lines up with the sporty, redesigned Acura TL, which has a much roomier interior, plus plenty of technology and safety features. The Saab 9-5—from Volvo’s rival Swedish brand—is perhaps the closest competitor to the S60, but the Saab is even more outdated, with a design that reaches back a full decade. The 2009 Volvo S60 boasts better interior appointments and a better ride than the 9-5, though the (more expensive) 9-5 is more of a driver’s car—and it has a roomier backseat. The Audi A6 is another alternative; it offers either front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive and has a roomy interior that feels more upscale and exhibits a nice ride, but it’s also significantly more expensive than the others. Those who want refinement and a stylish appearance, inside especially, should consider the Nissan Maxima. The new Maxima isn’t at all the sport sedan it once was, but it’s comfortable—almost opulent—inside and has some of the features of pricier lux sedans.
