Volvo’s entry-level compact sedan (which shares a platform with the Mazda3) gets a few key updates for 2007, including standard stability control on all trim levels, some interior tweaks, and the availability of factory-installed Sirius satellite radio. The standard engine remains a 2.4-liter DOHC in-line five-cylinder with turbocharger and intercooler. It is rated at 168 horsepower. T5 models come standard with a slightly larger turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter engine offering 218 horsepower. A six-speed manual or five-speed “Geartronic” automatic with manual/sport shifting capability are the transmission choices. Buyers may choose either front- or all-wheel drive on both models. All trim levels come standard with both traction and stability control for 2007. Anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist, driver and passenger side-impact and full-length curtain airbags, and Volvo’s OnCall emergency services/telematics system are also standard. The S40 scores highly in NHTSA side-impact testing (5 Stars) and earned 4 Stars in front-impact testing for the driver and 5 Stars for the front-seat passenger. Though it can be pricey relative to other small sedans, the S40 does offer a high level of standard safety equipment along with sporty driving/handling characteristics in an attractively styled, modern package.
