Passat
An all-new version of Volkswagen's mid-size Passat sedan debuts for 2006 that's larger in nearly every dimension and offers a roomier interior, with 2.4-inches of rear-seat legroom added. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder engine comes standard and delivers 200 horsepower. It's mated to a six-speed manual transmission, with a six-speed automatic that features Tiptronic manual-shift capability optional. The new Passat rides on a four-wheel independent suspension with electro-mechanical power steering, and comes with a host of chassis-control systems, including four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, Automatic Slip Regulation, and VW's Electronic Stabilization Program. No less than eight airbags are standard, along with active head restraints to help reduce whiplash injuries; rear side-thorax airbags are optional. Major options include a multifunctional steering wheel, leather seats, and a premium Dynaudio sound system from the Danish audiophile company of the same name that's custom designed for the Passat. Wagon versions will be added to the lineup at mid-year, while a 3.6-liter, 280-horsepower V-6 model that will offer optional all-wheel drive will debut in the fourth quarter of 2006.
