Volkswagen's retro-flavored New Beetle coupe and convertible receives a number of enhancements for 2006. For starters, it gets a new base engine, the 150-horsepower, 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that otherwise powers the Jetta sedan. It's mated to either a five-speed manual transmission, or a new six-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual-shift capability. The 2.0-liter and 1.8-liter engines have been deleted from the line, though the 100-horsepower, 1.9-liter TDI turbodiesel version remains for top fuel-efficiency. There's new front and rear fascias, fenders, and side sills outside, with elongated and restyled head and taillights and horizontal reverse lights that are newly connected by a mesh grille. Inside, there's new chrome trim around the air vents and a redesigned instrument cluster; a new center console features larger cupholders. Leatherette seating trim is now included, with full leather upholstery optional. VW's Electronic Stability Program is now standard across the line, as are 16-inch alloy wheels; 17-inch rims are optional. Three new exterior colors include Shadow Blue, Gecko Green, and Salsa Red. Standard features include four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes and front-side airbags; heated seats and windshield washers, and a CD changer are optional.
