Volkswagen is putting the sport back in its wagon with the revival of its Jetta SportWagen. It’s the first time the automaker has offered this two-box model since 2004, but according to a company official, “The market for wagons is hot right now.”

The new version will definitely not be confused with the last-generation SportWagen. Rather than sharp, boxy styling, the ’08 model features a more rounded look that might be confused with an Audi A4 Avant.

Considering Volkswagen’s current “Safe Happens” ad campaign, there should be no surprise that the SportWagen will offer an array of safety features, such as antilock brakes and stability control, as well as frontal, side, and curtain airbags.

On the powertrain side, the base model, priced around $18,000, will feature a 2.5-liter in-line five. It’s rated at 170 hp, 20 more than the old wagon. The upmarket engine is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter FSI, rated at 200 hp.

Starting next January. VW will add a third powertrain package, featuring the new 2.0-liter TDI Bluetec. It will meet the toughestU.S. emissions standards — meaning it will be available in all 50 states — without the addition of urea.
