Larger, lighter by 180 pounds, and offering added power and features over its predecessor, Subaru's mid-size Legacy sedan and wagon - including its SUV wannabe Outback models - come redesigned for 2005 with a more-aerodynamic wedge-shaped exterior styling. Base versions continue to come powered by the previous generation's 168-horsepower horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, though it's been revised with enhanced throttle response. GT models now offer a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant that produces 250-horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. In addition to its standard five-speed-manual gearbox, the GT is available with a new five-speed-automatic transmission that incorporates a manual shifting provision that can be operated either via the floor-mounted gearshift or by using buttons on the Momo-designed sport steering wheel. Side-impact and side-curtain airbags are now standard on all models. The Outback rides on an even-higher ground clearance than before, and continues to come trimmed with SUV-styled body cladding and styling cues. Outback Sedans feature a horizontally opposed 250-horsepower six-cylinder engine, while wagons are offered with a variety of powerplants, including the aforementioned six-cylinder, 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo, and 168-horsepower 2.5-liter normally aspirated engines.
