The 2008 Saturn Aura is one of the safest vehicles in its class, with great crash-test scores.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Saturn Aura earns five out of five stars in passenger, driver, side impact front, and side impact rear tests, and four out of five stars in rollover protection. The Saturn Aura has not been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

"The Aura doesn't skimp on safety provisions," Cars.com says. And it's true. According to Edmunds, the Saturn Aura has "antilock disc brakes, traction control and the OnStar emergency communications system," along with "Front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags." But other, more comfort-oriented features bulk up the Aura’s safety record, adds Cars.com. With the "steering wheel telescoping adjustment," you can find the appropriate distance from the airbag--a major safety concern. You can add "power-adjustable pedals" as well, reports ConsumerGuide.

When it comes to visibility, the Saturn Aura is "just OK," remarks ConsumerGuide, when looking "dead astern and to the right-rear," though there is "no problem otherwise."

Conclusion

The 2008 Saturn Aura is packed with safety features and scores very well in crash tests.

Other Choices:

If you're looking at mid-size sedans, you already know that there are plenty of choices available. You may also know that the Toyota Camry is the sales leader. The latest Camry, introduced in 2007 alongside the Saturn Aura, has its merits, but also its faults. There are quality issues with this Toyota; to keep costs down, the interior of this generation of Camry exhibits some inexpensive-looking pieces. Head to head, the 2008 Aura is decidedly sportier in feel than the Toyota Camry or the Hyundai Sonata, more along the lines of the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Ford Fusion. While the sophistication of the Hyundai Sonata has improved dramatically, it is not quite the equal of the Aura. The Volkswagen Passat is in the same size class and offers a tightly constructed cabin with a great look and feel, but it's due to be replaced by a new car in 2009 or 2010.
