Since 2004, Rolls-Royce has been teasing the arrival of a new convertible under the guise of the concept 100EX. At the 2007 Detroit auto show in January, the teasing is no more – and the Phantom Drophead Coupé will arrive in production-ready form.
The Drophead is a four-seat, two-door convertible version of the existing Phantom sedan. And it’s a step out of the normal Rolls box for the British luxe brand, with softer exterior style and more modern lines. Like the Phantom sedan, it’s built on an aluminum space frame. And underhood is the stock Rolls-Royce 6.75-liter, V-12 engine, which the brand says will launch the Drophead to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.
Stunning details include the brushed steel hood and A-pillar from the 100EX concept shown in 2004, and the teak decking for the convertible top stow area. Trunk space is unaffected by the top storage, Rolls promises. The doors are rear-hinged, as the rear doors are on the Phantom.
