Resurrecting one of the most revered names in American muscle-car history for 2004, the rear-drive GTO sports coupe receives a revised engine in just its second year. The LS2 V-8 adds 50 horses over last year's powerplant for a total of 400 horsepower with 395 lb-ft of torque. As before the V-8 can be mated to either an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox. A new, split dual-exhaust system adds a more ominous rumble to the '05 GTO, while newly added exterior options include two new colors and the car's somewhat lackluster styling can now be made somewhat more-aggressive looking by means of an available hood scoop. The GTO is built in Australia by GM's Holden subsidiary, where a less-sporty version is sold as the Monaro. A limited-slip differential, three-channel traction control system and four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes come standard. Inside, leather bucket seats are installed in both the front and rear, and a standard premium audio system comes with a six-disc in-dash CD changer.

How does an old-school coupe make it in the day of the hot hatch? Big power, that's how.
