The second generation of Nissan's back-to-basics mid-size Xterra sport-utility vehicle made its debut at mid-year 2005 with added interior room, freshened styling and more power. It is built on the Frontier pickup's platform and comes with the same basic 4.0-liter V-6 engine (though rated in this case at 261 horsepower vs. 266 in the Frontier) mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The 2007 Xterra is offered in three models – X, S, Off Road, and SE. All four are available in 4x4 models and all but the Off Road model are available with rear-wheel drive. The '07 version is mostly a carryover, with changes consisting of standard mud guards on four-wheel-drive models, the addition of an auxiliary iPod jack to the optional Rockford Fosgate premium audio system on SE models and standard leather-wrapped steering wheel for SE Off Road models. Standard safety equipment includes four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, and VDC control; curtain airbags are available optionally. Models with either of the two available four-wheel-drive systems also get an Active Brake Limited Slip function. As befits its rugged character, a first-aid kit is included. The interior includes an adjustable channel system in the cargo hold for securing bike racks and sports gear, and a total of ten utility hooks. A 60/40-split folding rear seat, folding front passenger seat, double-deck glovebox, and large center console add to the vehicle's overall utility. Available options include front-side and side curtain airbags with rollover protection and XM or Sirius satellite radio.
