The second-generation of Nissan's back-to-basics midsize Xterra sport-utility vehicle debuts for 2005 with added interior room, freshened styling and more underhood power. It shares platforms SUV and comes powered by a 250-horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 engine that's mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Rear- and part-time four-wheel-drive versions continue in the line, while four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist are newly standard. Nissan's Vehicle Dynamic Control system is optional, along with a number of off-road-oriented enhancements. As befits its rugged character, a first-aid kit is included. A newly larger interior includes an adjustable channel system in the cargo hold for securing bike racks and sports gear, and a total of ten utility hooks. A 60/40-split folding rear seat, folding front passenger seat, double-deck glovebox, and large center console add to the vehicle's overall utility.
