Redesigned for 2006, Mercury's version of the Ford Explorer rides on a revised chassis with an updated front suspension and new independent rear suspension for improved driving dynamics. Styling revisions include a new, bolder front grille and front and rear fascias, and the inclusion of power-deployable integrated running boards that hide within the rocker panels when not in use. While the previous 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine remains the standard powerplant, an all-new three-valve 4.6-liter V-8 is offered for 2006 that nets 292 horsepower (a 22-percent improvement over last year's V-8) and 300 lb-ft of torque. The V-6 comes mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, while the V-8 offers a new six-speed automatic. Available in rear- or all-wheel-drive versions, with either five- or seven-passenger seating, the Mountaineer comes with four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, front-side airbags, and Ford's AdvanceTrac stability enhancement system with Roll Stability Control. Safety Canopy side-curtain airbags are optional. A long list of available features includes a navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, heated leather seats, a moonroof, and power adjustable brake/accelerator pedals.
