All-new and with a production run of only 500 units for 2005 and a price tag well over $300,000, the SLR is built using a full carbon fiber monocoque shell and comes wrapped in true race-car styling. Developed jointly with the automaker's partner in Formula 1 racing, McLaren, the SLR is said to be able to make the 0-60 mph run in about 3.8 seconds and reach a reported top speed of over 200 mph, thanks to its hand-built 617-horsepower supercharged V-8 powerplant. This engine includes a dry-sump lubrication system that's claimed to help make the engine shorter, which allows it to be mounted lower in the frame for better aerodynamics and a lower center of gravity. The SLR's ceramic brake technology is said to afford exceptional stopping power, with higher heat-resistance, stouter structural strength, and longer service life than conventional materials. Looking some something to tell the troopers you've been speeding without having them rely on a radar gun? An adaptive rear spoiler mounted in the trunk lid automatically deploys at a 65-degree angle to provide additional aerodynamic down-force when braking from speeds of 60 mph or higher.

2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren by TCC Team (11/24/2003)
Two seats, eight cylinders, 617 horsepower and $400,000 - but does it add up?
