R-Class

The new R-Class "sports tourer" resembles a slightly sportier and more aerodynamic minivan with conventional passenger-car doors, not unlike the Chrysler Pacifica. The R-Class is comprised of two models, the R350 and R500. The former comes powered by a 268-horsepower, twin-cam 3.5-liter V-6 engine, while the latter is fitted with a single-cam, 5.0-liter V-8 that uses twin spark plugs and three valves per cylinder to generate 302-horsepower. Both engines are fitted to a new seven-speed automatic transmission with touch-shift capability and Mercedes' full-time 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system; its four-wheel traction control system can assure mobility even if three of four wheels lose their grip. The R-Class promises sharp handling with its four-wheel independent suspension, with a double-wishbone design up front and a new four-link array at the rear. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist are likewise included, as is Mercedes' Electronic Stability Program. The vehicle offers a roomy passenger cabin that seats six adults in three rows of seats, and the two rear pairs of seats can fold flat to accommodate various cargo configurations. Side-curtain airbags are included that span all three seating rows, and a rollover sensor can deploy the seatbelt tensioners and the curtain airbags if the vehicle senses that a rollover is about to occur.

Let's hope it's not the final ride.
