ML-Class

2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

A new version of Mercedes' ML-Class sport-utility vehicle debuted this spring that now rides on a car-like unibody frame, which not only saves weight, but contributes to more nimble cornering, and improved fuel economy. The new version is larger in virtually every dimension than before, with larger integrated fenders flanking a high, angled beltline. A more spacious cabin features a cockpit-like instrument panel with richer-feeling materials throughout; a 60/40 split-fold rear seat facilitates various cargo-carrying arrangements. The base M350 is powered by a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 268 horsepower and a sturdy 258 lb-ft of torque. The M500 version, meanwhile, adds a 5.0-liter V-8 that packs a punch with 302 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are fitted to a new seven speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels via an improved version of Mercedes' 4MATIC full-time four-wheel drive system. A more road-worthy suspension features a double-wishbone design in the front suspension and a newly developed four-link array at the rear, for a more refined ride and car-like handling characteristics. A revised four-wheel traction control system assures mobility even if three of four wheels lose their grip. The vehicle's maximum tow rating is 5000 pounds. Side-curtain airbags that cover both rows of seats come standard. Mercedes' accident-sensing Pre-Safe system, whiplash-preventing active headrests, a power liftgate, an AIRMATIC air suspension, and an interface that allows an Apple iPod MP3 player to integrate with the car's audio system are optional.
