While Mercedes-Benz readies a redesigned mid-size luxury M-Class SUV for production, likely for the 2006 model year, the vehicles offers a new trim package for 2005, the Special Edition. Replacing last year's Inspiration Edition, it sports a "power dome" hood, a silver-painted chrome grille, accessory running boards, unique 17-inch wheels, polished-aluminum roof rails, smoked taillamps, and chrome door handle trim. Inside are unique sport seats, a chrome-highlighted instrument panel and a choice of either matte birch or matte dark burl walnut wood finishes. Otherwise, the ML350 includes a 232-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine, while the ML500 comes powered by a 288-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8. Both engines are mated to a five-speed electronically controlled automatic and a full-time 4-wheel-drive system with "4ETS" traction control. A two-speed transfer case lowers the gear ratio and multiplies torque for slow-speed driving.
