2007 Mercedes-Benz CLS Class Review

April 3, 2008

The CLS was added to the Mercedes lineup in 2006 as an all-new model. This four-door has a sleeker and more coupe-like profile than the average luxury sedan — with crisp curves and a tall beltline that creates a lowered-roof effect. For 2007, the lineup is improved with a new CLS63 AMG, which comes with a 507 horsepower engine vs. the previous CLS55 AMG’s 469-hp engine. A CLS550 supplants the ’06 CLS500 — with an up-rated 382-hp engine vs. the previous year’s 302-hp V-8. All ’07 CLS models are equipped with Mercedes’ PRE-SAFE collision preparation system, which was originally offered on the S-Class sedan. All models also get a premium Harmon/Kardon audio system with six-disc CD changer. Both CLS-Class engines drive the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. An Airmatic suspension, Sensotronic Brake Control, traction control, Automatic Slip Program, and Electronic Stability Program are included. Side-impact and side-curtain airbags, and active front head restraints, are standard. The CLS also comes with heated and ventilated multi-contour seats, adaptive cruise control and headlamps, in addition to a power trunk closer. All audio systems have an interface for an Apple iPod/ MP3 player.
