While Mercedes
heralds the all-new CLS a "four-door coupe," don't be fooled-it
still comes with four doors. The idea here is that the CLS cuts a sleeker and
more-coupe-like profile than does the average luxury sedan. A new 3.5-liter V-6
engine that produces 272 horsepower powers the base CLS 350, while the CLS 500
raises the performance bar with its 306-horsepower 5.0-liter V-8. Both engines
drive the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. Sensotronic
Brake Control and the latest generation of the automaker's Electronic Stability
Program are standard. Optional bi-xenon headlamps include adaptive Headlamp
Assist, which combines here with the vehicle's cornering lights to illuminate
the road around curves. Front-side and side-curtain airbags are standard, and a
"Pre-Safe" preventive occupant protection system is available that can
anticipate when a collision is imminent and react accordingly. It will, for
example, automatically tighten the seat belts in the split second before a crash
occurs. While the base model is already opulently equipped, the top model adds
such amenities as an "Airmatic" air suspension and "Thermotronic" four-zone
climate control.
